Fempreneur’s journey led her to initiate Grit Coaches & Consultants; stemming out of the desire to do more, to serve – not only women running businesses but people at large; through the wonderful self-development tool called ‘Coaching’.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Happy Executive Woman Podcast. I am your host, Anita Charlot, and today is another exciting episode with another phenomenal woman from my community and her name is Khadija Usman. And I apologize if I mess that up.
    
Khadija Usman:
Thank you, Anita! 
    
Anita: 
You are so welcome. You’re so welcome. So I wanted to talk to you today about your recent launch of Grit coaches. And if you can tell us and tell the listeners, why did you decide to create Grit, and what type of platform is it?
    
Khadija:
Hi, Anita! Well, Grit is a learning and development platform, and what inspired me to start with this was I started my entrepreneurial journey a decade back. And throughout my journey, I realized there were no coaching or, you know, no guidance, or mentoring, which I needed for my startup and to run my business. So every step, I felt that, you know, maybe I needed a godfather or something. So my search led me to business coaching, and I’m based in South Asia, and at that time, I couldn’t find anyone around me. Most of the coaches were in the US or in Europe. So I had to, obviously, resort to getting my coaching from the coaches over there. And that was obviously, you know, there’s a currency difference, and that was a bit pricey for me. And I realized that, you know, there’s such a gap, and if anybody needs that kind of help, that kind of guidance when they’re starting a winter. Right. So that’s where I thought that, you know, why should I not start a platform which connects more people, to coaches, more people who are starting their own businesses? Yes, so we were focusing on the emerging markets, the MENA region, South Asia, and like, as I mentioned, that, over here, it’s something which is still, it needs a lot of awareness on it, and we’re working on that as well. And we’re working on many fronts for that. We worked through our blog through work cast. And then we have awareness sessions and diverse social media handles. So yes, so we’re, while we’re creating awareness, we’re also building the brand called Grit, which basically connects clients to coaches, mentors, and trainers.
    
Anita:
That is awesome. So I love the fact that you saw that there was a need there, and instead of, you know, just saying, Oh, this is something that we should have, that you actually decided to create it. Right. So that’s amazing. So what made you decide to call it Grit coaching? I thought about that, I was like, Grit coaches. Why did you what how did you come up with the name?
    
Khadija:
I love that question, Anita. Actually, one of my coaches also shared with me that, you know, look at you, you have so much grit in you and you know, this is what is needed to make something so successful, the will to go on, the perseverance, the resilience. And that’s where I thought that yes, you know, that’s what we want, more people to help them develop grit in them. And so the experts that we connect people to, that’s what they’re basically helping their clients with, to develop grit and the will to go on, because, you know, anytime it’s so easy to give up. It’s so difficult to continue when you see no results that show up day in and day out. When there seems to be no hope. So I think coaching helps people with that.
    
Anita:
Absolutely, absolutely. You know, being an entrepreneur, if the coaches are looking to have their own desires to have their own business, being an entrepreneur is not easy, right? You have to want to get up, and even if you’re working like a full-time job and you want to start a business on the side, that means that, you know, you’re giving up a lot of your private time, your family time. So you have to know, you have to develop grit, as you say, right, to make sure that you have that strength, that resilience that you know, stick with it, where you can continue to move forward and not get disappointed. And having a coach to help you do that is a great idea.
    
Khadija:
Yes because, Anita, it does get very overwhelming at times. Because when you have, when you’re doing it as a side hustle initially, you are juggling, you know, so many roles wearing so many hats. And so sometimes you need another perspective, somebody to bring sanity back into your life. Sort of tells you that, you know, this is where you need to slow down, and this is where you need to focus more because we very easily tend to get diverted from the area, which should be our focus.
    
Anita:
Yes. That is so true. That is so true. Like, once you’ve been in the industry or in the business for a while, then you recognize, like the shiny object syndrome, right? Oh, well, I know I want to start my business. Well, let me do this. Oh, wait, there’s, you know, I just saw an infomercial for that. I just saw something on Instagram for this. Let me try that. Let me try that. And a coach is there to say, You know what, just slow down. Right? Just slow down. This is where you are in your business. This is what you should focus on for now. We’re not I’m not saying that you can’t do that. But let’s table it for later. So yes, coaches are great, especially at the beginning of your business.
    
Khadija:
Like, I’ll give you my own example, as an entrepreneur, and I know what happens with most entrepreneurs, since we are the doer type, we get really excited when we see something new and exactly something shiny, and we want to try new things. And when we start focusing or you know, then we get diverted towards newer things while, you know, we should be focusing on the basics, to begin with.
    
Anita:
Yes, yes. And it also helps to, I’m glad this is something that is definitely needed, because it helps to have someone tell you, okay, in the beginning, this is what you need to do. And sometimes when you’re all over the place, you need structure, and a coach helps to provide that structure for you, right? And then a coach is also there, if you need like, Oh, my goodness, you get overwhelmed. And the coach is there that, you know, okay, let’s just breathe for a minute, you’re gonna be okay. And, you know, or I can’t find time for my husband or my wife. It’s feeling like I’m not giving them more attention, then the coach is there, you know, to help you say, Yes, I know, I went through this, you know, this is, you know, consider doing this or that. So that is, that is absolutely great. I’m so happy that you’re doing this, especially for…
    
Khadija:
Thank you. 
    
Anita:
You’re welcome! …especially for the reasons that you’re doing it. So I think you shared a little bit about it with us, but I just wanted to ask you directly. What is your vision with Grit? Can you share a little bit more about that?
    
Khadija:
Well, Anita, my vision with Grit is to make coaching accessible to as many people as possible. Because, as I mentioned that, you know, in the Asia region, not many people are aware of it. You know, if you randomly ask people, they would be like, you know, why do I need coaching? And you know, what’s that all about? And, you know, they’re not convinced that they should be spending money on this. So that’s one thing: to make them aware that you know, it can really help you, empower you, and live the life that you wish. And to get from where you are to where you want to be.
    
Anita:
Right? Yeah. Yeah. So as a startup, I know we’ve talked a little bit about it, but as a startup, let’s say, someone who has already had an idea for the business, they have a name for the business, they have an idea for the business. Maybe they’ve even started the business and they’ve been doing what they want to do for a while. Since they’re already doing the things that they want to do. How could they benefit, someone like that benefit from having a coach?
    
Khadija:
Well, initially, Anita, the thing is that people, when they start up, they’re doing a lot of things themselves, like handling the social media themselves, and delivering a service or if they have a product, selling the product as well working on that part to this inventory management. There are so many things involved. And like if I feel with my own ventures as well, that coaching helped me realize, and my coaches actually helped me realize that you know, I can hire people in lesser funds as well. Most people think that you know, we need to spend a lot on team building. We don’t know how to build teams with limited resources. So I think coaching helps with that as well because a lot of business coaches, they work with so many startup founders, that through their own experience in dealing with them, and a lot of them have their own setups too so they’re so well acquainted with the challenges and you know, they can sort of give more perspective and ask the right questions, and lead you to your own conclusions, which can help you develop your business better.
    
Anita:
Yes. When you’re starting the business, and you think that, you know, like you said, you have to hire all these people, and it’s gonna cost you all this money. Me being someone that has started my business on a budget, as I say, you know, there are different ways to do things without breaking the bank, right? There are different services that… different websites services that you can hire, or different independent contractors, virtual assistants, right, you don’t have to have a whole office full of people, you don’t even have to start in an office. You can start in your home, but sometimes, like you said, people don’t know that. And it’s not until they talk to another coach that says, hey, you know, I know this is what you’re thinking, but you don’t need to spend the money there, right now. We can get this done for 70% less, and then put those funds toward this thing over here that we really need.
    
Khadija:
And also one more thing, Anita. A lot of entrepreneurs, when they begin they’re real micromanagers. I think there are very few people who can see the bigger picture, and we’re fine with delegating because you know, you always feel that it’s my baby, you can’t do the things like I can do. But then in order to grow, we need more hands we need, we need more people to work with us. Because we can’t be doing everything ourselves. So we need to understand that there are certain things that can be delegated so that we can focus more on the growth part.
    
Anita:
Yes. So true. When I started, I managed everything about my business. In the beginning, for at least, I kid you not, the first 15 years, I had to do it. Only I could do it, I had to learn how to do this, I had to learn how to do that. And that’s because I had heard so many horror stories about individuals that would hire people to do their websites or their marketing and then the person would just like leave or ghost them, right? And they could they didn’t have access to their own website, they didn’t have any of their, you know, collateral from their marketing. It’s like, that wasn’t going to be me, right. But it got to the point where I was like, You know what, I’m spending a lot of time doing tasks that are more administrative versus tasks that are more strategic. I’m spending more time being an employee of my business versus being a business owner with employees or contractors. And so I started delegating things to others. But I think the benefit of having had that struggle, initially is that when I hire someone to do something, I know exactly what I want, right? I know exactly how much time it’s going to take. So when I asked someone to create a logo, they told me it’s gonna cost $250, and it’s gonna take three weeks, two months. I’m like, Okay, thank you, but no, thank you, because I know where I can go get the logo done for $25 and then have it back in two days. So you know, just knowing, having done that work and having had to figure out how to grow a business on…

Khadija:
Yes, you’re right. It’s good to be on top of things and know exactly what you need. But then when you add more people in and delegate and want to like feel that certain relief now!
    
Anita:
Oh, it sure is. So I think on an I don’t know if you’ve heard the story on another podcast, but in 2020, when the pandemic hit, and we had George Floyd, you know, the George Floyd death, just say it that way. It was really, it was a very trying year for me, and then I found out that my mom had dementia. And so now I had to, you know, figure out how to help her, how to get her placed properly. So there’s a lot of stuff going on, and at some at one point, I had started forgetting things, right? And I said, Oh, my goodness, do I have dementia? You know, what’s going on? And I was like, let me go get tested because the last thing I want to do is wait around. Let me find out what’s happening so I can figure it out because I need to be on you know, mentally, every day. I can’t afford to be down. So I go in and go through this four and a half hours of testing, and after the four and a half hours of testing, when it came time to go over the results, the neuropsychologist said, there is nothing physically or chemically wrong with your brain. The issue is, that you’re doing too much. You have to start either stepping back and not being involved in so many things, or you have to start delegating. And so at that time, I had fallen back into the rut of doing things or the habit of doing things all myself. At that time, I hired like three different people. I hired Meghan, you know, my assistant at the time, who was extremely helpful. I hired Ali, who helped me build my website. And then I had a couple of independent contractors for other things. But like you said, there was no way I could have this full life and still be available for my family and do what I needed to do for my mom if I didn’t have help. And one thing that entrepreneurs need to learn is it’s okay to hire people, and who better to explain it to them than another coach. Right? They have to know this. Yeah. This is good. I’m really enjoying this conversation because I think it’s important for those that want to build a business to understand that they’re not alone, right? They may have these ideas, and working with a coach is not like, you know, you have to worry about someone that is going to steal your idea, or, you know, take it and run with it. No, your coach is there to support you! This is your business idea, the coach is there to help you make your business idea a lot better. Yes, yes. Love it. So how can clients relate to coaches from different cultures?
    
Khadija:
That’s a great question, Anita. You know, that depends on the kind of coaching they’re getting. If they’re seeking life coaching, then perhaps somebody from their own culture might be a better fit. Because, you know, purely life coaching would involve working with your relationships with others, and you know, these kinds of things. But if you’re going for a market, like a marketing coach, or a business coach, if you want to work with them, then I don’t think culture matters as much. Because what you want is another skill set, and anybody can have it. I think that transcends all boundaries, even when it comes to mompreneurs, and, you know, women, like you know, the corporate female executive. So you would realize that, you know, women have struggled more or less the same across borders. So across the board, like, mompreneurs have kids to take care of, a house to look after, and so many responsibilities. So, you know, the life of a mom is the same everywhere. So I think culture does matter, in some instances, but not in most of them, no.
    
Anita: 
Yes, yes, you are so correct, there are there will be times when you would need to work with a coach with the same cultural background, because of those cultural things, right? Those things are going to come into play as it relates to your business and your life around the business. But marketing, as long as that coach is, you know, experienced in marketing, then that definitely works. If it’s a coach that you’re, you know, a podcast coach, as Paul is, you know, it doesn’t matter whether or not we have the same background. He’s in the top five of the podcast. So that’s definitely someone that you want to talk to. So skill set matters, and I think this is a great idea. I’ve gone to the website, and you know, you guys are gonna have all the information for Khadija’s website, and you’ll be able to click through and learn more about it. And I took a look through and I looked at the coaches, and it’s a very diverse group of coaches. And that’s great.
    
Khadija:
Absolutely, Anita! While we’re focusing on our audience, the MENA region and South Asia, but our coaches are from around the world. We have coaches from Canada, from the US, from New Zealand, and from Asia as well. And some of them interestingly, the ones in Asia, some who are originally from South America or Europe. So that’s really interesting. You know, so they all bring diversity, and different coaches can communicate in different languages too. So we have to speak in Arabic, and we have coaches who speak Portuguese and Spanish. So you know, if there’s a lot of cultural diversity within our platform.
    
Anita:
Yes, yes. That was amazing. I was like, Oh, wow, look at this. Great stuff. So as a community builder at Fempreneur, and want to give a little bit, a little bit of background about Fempreneur, because we’ve been talking about Grit for listeners, but as a community builder at Fempreneur, you are familiar with the challenges women in business face, what kind of coaching Do you think they could benefit women could benefit from the most?
    
Khadija:
Well, women entrepreneurs, especially when they start off, one thing they struggle the most with is time management. They’re not sure that, you know, especially mompreneurs are not sure if they’ll be able to do justice to their relationships, and their duties as a mother plus their own business. So I think that particular aspect, when they’re working with a business coach, can be addressed. Besides that, personal branding, we have a wonderful personal branding coach, I’d like to share that, you know, our personal branding coach used to be ex Ms. Singapore 2017. If you look at her, you can’t believe she has two kids and how fabulously she manages her coaching, and her own magazine as well, her digital magazine. So it’s really wonderful, you know, somebody like that can really guide women entrepreneurs to build their own brand because especially if you’re in the service sector, Anita, I feel that your personal brand really matters. If you’re selling products, maybe not as much, but for service providers, because, you know, it’s your credibility that people are buying to into when they’re buying the service from you. So that really matters, and we have personal, great personal branding coaches for that. And then we have business coaches for that and marketing coaches, and of course, life coaches, too. And I believe in it, as you would very well know that all good coaches are life coaches at some level. They do see you holistically. They’re not seeing just one aspect of right you, they are seeing you as a person in a context, and they advise you and work with you accordingly. And they’re empowering you to do what you want to do instead of prompting you. So that’s a powerful thing, and it can really help women entrepreneurs, and you know, I’ve sort of tested with premiums on the community, like coaching sessions with community members, and they were really excited about it. So that seems to be a market that we could really tap into.
    
Anita:
Good. That’s, that’s great. You know, I know that Fempreneur was what you were doing first, Fempreneur hub is what you did first before Grit. So tell our listeners what Fempreneur hub is, why you started that, and then was that the catalyst leading you to Grit? Or was that something that you recognized that you wanted to do alongside the Fempreneur hub?
    
Khadija:
Well, I’ll have to give you a brief, in a nutshell, share my whole journey from the beginning. So as I mentioned, you know, when I started my entrepreneurial journey, there was no guidance and no coaching. So, I learned a lot in the process. I learned the do’s and the do not, and once I felt that I knew I now have some knowledge and know a little bit. So I thought why not share this with other people who are probably struggling or, you know, aspiring to start a business of your own. So that’s when I thought of this community where they can sort of voice their challenges. What’s stopping them, and what roadblocks they are facing? And so probably from my own experiences, I could guide them. So initially, I started with guiding on a personal level. But now we have a community of 3k plus just on Facebook. The entrepreneurs from there often reach out to me, and I do mentor them when I do get time. And we do have volunteers as well, who would like to be mentoring or offer premiums or coaches as well. So they, you know, so that’s a platform, which is working with women who run businesses from home, or who want to start a business of their own. So it helps them at a very basic level and supports them. So it’s a commodity, which works in bringing out the best in them. What made me then extend to Grit. Well, I felt that you know, this is a women entrepreneurs, community. We are addressing their challenges, and when I got coaching as well, I saw the benefit of it, so I felt that why should it be exclusive? Why should it not be inclusive? When we say, you know, because our tagline is, an inclusive world is a better world. So I asked myself, are we being inclusive? And the answer was no. That’s where I thought that you know, great, we can cater to everybody, and focus on making coaching accessible to any person who needs it. And everybody does need it, Anita, at some point, or the other at some level or the other in their life. People who need to be coached in one thing or the other. It can be business, it can be we need support. And sometimes it’s not from just a family or friends, we need a neutral perspective. Yes, that’s where I think coaching does come.
    
Anita:
Yes, you are so right. And I believe that your awareness campaign is going to help people to see that they do need coaching. Because a lot of people, like you said, don’t see the value. Why should I pay for that? You know, I just go to my mom, or go to my sister, or go to my friend when I need to talk. But you know, usually, those people are, those people are sometimes too invested, to really be honest with you, or they’re too invested, to be able to see what you really need to do, you know, which may not, which may not be in alignment with what you want to do. But a coach, being an objective person is not looking at you from… I know you for 10 years, you know, for the past 10 years, all of our lives. I’m looking at you from what you tell me you want, right? You want to be this business person in order to do that and be successful at it, here are the things that you need to do. And they can be completely objective. So that is great.

Khadija:
Family and friends, they can echo our limiting beliefs. Because whatever we believe about ourselves, they start believing the same too, but a coach, who is a neutral person, will help us move ahead of those beliefs or break the barriers, as they say. So you know, we can work to remove those limitations and be where we want to be.
    
Anita:
Now that was powerful. You said, talking to our friends and family, they can echo our limiting beliefs. That is so powerful and so true. So true. And so the value of working with someone that can be neutral, it will help us to break through and work through and growth grow through those things. That was very, very powerful. How do individuals work with your coaches? Like how accessible are they, and what is the process like someone signs up for coaching? And then what happens? Is it a phone call? Is it a Zoom call? Is it an email? How does it work?
    
Khadija:
Well, there are two instances and sometimes a lead or a client that comes to us they know exactly the kind of coaching they want, and then it’s pretty simple. We just connect them with a coach who we think is the best fit for that particular client. We share the calendar and then we set up a Zoom meeting for them, and prior to that the payment is processed, but it’s not forwarded to the coaches until the service has been delivered because since we’re the connectors, we want to ensure that both parties are happy. And that is very important to us because we want to provide a trusted and safe place for everyone. And, well, this is how it works for people who know the kind of coaching they want. But often a lot of people, especially in a continent where coaching is not as prevalent, they do not know the kind of coaching they want. So often we have to it’s like a vetting process. We go through with them and discuss the kind of coaching they might benefit from, then we give them a couple of options of the fit that could work better with them. And that’s where we connect them and share their calendars and they are free to have a discovery call, and then, later on, set up a session with whichever coach they think is a better fit. So this process is pretty simple through our website, but let me share some sort of exciting thing that we are soon launching our app, which will have Zoom integration, Calendly, and the best part about it are the digital wallets that we will have. So you know anybody, any coach does not have to wait for us to share with them if they’ve received the payment or not. They can just see it when before delivering their service, but they can only withdraw it once the service has been delivered. Sort of like Fiverr. The support system is integrated, payment is integrated, the admin… So it takes care of all the admin and the marketing part of coaches and writers and mentors, whoever is working with us.
    
Anita:
Oh, that’s amazing. That is amazing. So are these one on… like one session? Or can they buy like a package of sessions? Or how does that work? When someone starts working with a coach, are they only working with them one time, or…?
    
Khadija:
Well, right now, because we are working through the website, and it’s a bit manual at the moment. So they have listed programs as opposed to one on one sessions as well. So they have one on one sessions listed separately, and the charges for them are listed separately as well. And through coaching and coaching for small, medium enterprises, large enterprises, and individuals are all sort of segmented and the prices and the code are shared separately. So whoever wants to offer any of those services, for them, it can be one on one. It can be a program too, but for the app, the wonderful thing would be that the coaches would have their own dashboards so they can maneuver this all on their own. We won’t be the ones updating it for them. They can have their own dashboards, they can put up their profile, their logos, testimonials, the mode of language they deliver their sessions in, anything they want.
    
Anita:
That is amazing. I don’t think I’ve seen an app that does that, you know, before with the coaches.
    
Khadija:
Currently, they is no similar model. So I’m hopeful that it would be welcomed once it’s launched in September after some autumn, towards autumn. So it reminds me of the story. I remember it in bits. I’m going to share it with you, with your time. Okay, so well. The app reminds me of the story when a shoe company sent two of its representatives to Africa, if I have this correct, and but I think I have the gist of it. So when the representatives came back after the market research, one of them said well, people over there do not wear shoes, so there’s no market for shoes, but the other one said that there’s a huge market for shoes because nobody wears shoes over there. So, it’s a matter of perspective. While the fact that there is no existing app like that gives me hope that we could be pioneering into something, that could break ground, at the same time, but one does have anxieties and apprehension that, you know, what is it? Because it does take time to familiarize people to something they’ve not seen before.
    
Anita:
Yes, yes. That sounds amazing, and kudos to you for even thinking about coming up with that. That was, you know, that’s something that I hadn’t seen before. And, you know, for coaches just to be able to go in and update your pages, update on your own without having to submit to the service. You get to update it on your own. I’m excited to see how once that launches. I’m excited to see it and to take a look at it. So in the interest of time, I would like to ask you, for our listeners, exactly what can we do to support you? Would you like for us to share more about your platform with individuals? Or would or do you want us to share more about your platform with coaches? How can we support you?

Khadija:
Anita, that’s a great question. Again, I love your questioning, by the way. Yes, I think both, because we’re working to provide for both segments for coaches, as well as clients. We want more coaches for more clients, and you never know which client could be a good fit, which coach could be a good fit for a client. The bigger the pool, the more they get to choose from and you know, the more the probability rises, that they can find some who can meet their needs, and work with them.
    
Anita:
Awesome, I think we can do that. I’m excited to be a part of the community, and I can’t think of our… I have so many apps in my head. But where I see the Grit coaches, you guys just don’t know, the Grit coaches are not just, you know, people who are located in different parts of the world who aren’t connected themselves, but they’re in the chat, and they’re always communicating, and they’re building.

Khadija:
And we do have community meetups as well. And when new members are introduced to the old members, and we have a keynote speaker, and we share our challenges and learn from each other and support each other.
    
Anita:
Yeah, so it’s like almost like a support group for the coaches that are a part of Grit as well. This is beautiful. Well, thank you so much.
