It wasn’t that they were incapable.

My client had hired them for their skill sets, but her insecurities kept her from trusting her team and drew a wedge between her and her spouse. She realized that hiring a team of experts in their field and then not allowing them to stand in their genius was hurting her performance, the way her male counterparts precede her as a leader, and her marriage.

In a meeting with colleagues, the term legacy came up in the context of setting goals for the upcoming year.

Since I have been restructuring my life over the past several years, I had quite a bit to add to this conversation.

I shared how, in the past, the legacy that I wanted to leave every organization I worked for was that of leaving them stumped at how I could accomplish so much as one person.

One previous job, in particular, had to split my work between two full-time employees and an external agency as it was too much for my replacement. For years, I took that as a badge of honor.

At another previous job, I looked at the amount of work, coordination, and effort it took to ensure that a vertical of our business did not collapse due to the pandemic; it took a massive toll on my health. But once again, I saw this as a badge of honor.

Fast forward to recent self-reflective moments where I have taken an honest look at the level of my work ethic compared to those around me. I have since changed my concept of “legacy” in the workplace.

I am no longer available for…
Leaving work to go to the emergency room due to a two-day migraine
Leaving work roughly four times over a period of 3 months for an emergency chiropractor session due to my head and shoulders locking in place and being unable to move my head due to stress
Doing 4-times the work as my coworkers and then resenting THEM for it

The picture for this episode reminds me of the day my then-boyfriend, now husband, had to leave his job, pick up my youngest son to take me to the emergency room for a two-day migraine.

May your children never have to see you incapacitated due to stress from the workplace.

Am I the only one that has experienced failing health due to workplace trauma and stress? 
No.
Am I the only one that was about to send myself to an early grave, all for the sake of how others would perceive me? 
No.
Am I the only one who has said to myself, “they will miss me when I’m gone; they will see just how much work I did and then wish they had kept me?” 
No.
Am I the only one that has HAD to operate in this way to keep my job? 
No.

No, I’m not the only one! And neither are you!

Many Black women and other women of color have had to do the same or similar to be seen, heard, and “valued”. We’ll talk about recognizing your own value in another episode.

I can guarantee you that if you tell me a part of your life is suffering, I can connect it to something that you are or are not doing at the office that is contributing to it.

This is why having the right people in your corner is essential. The right coaches, mentors, networking communities, you name it, to help you identify and uncover that faulty programming and how you sabotage your health and relationships just to be perceived as the one-woman show.

A former client of mine worked in a male-dominated industry and company. As a Black woman, she felt pressured to do more than her White male counterparts. She came to me due to the stress her job was putting on her marriage and her inability to be fully present for a child she had recently adopted.

After a few sessions to understand her day-to-day activities, her work habits, and the complaints she heard from her spouse, we worked together to help her find the confidence to speak up at work and stand in her power. This resulted in her hiring a project manager to help with her workload and changing how she managed her team, holding them more accountable for their work vs. her taking more of it on herself to complete.

It wasn’t that they were not capable, my client had hired them for their skill sets, but her insecurities kept her from trusting her team and drew a wedge between her and her spouse. She realized that hiring a team of experts in their field and then not allowing them to stand in their genius was hurting her performance, the way her male counterparts perceived her as a leader, AND her marriage.

Once we corrected the faulty programming and helped her increase her confidence, learn to stand in her power, and improve her leadership skills, we worked on rebuilding the connection (and fire) in her marriage. I could stay connected to her via accountability check-ins to ensure that she practiced what we discussed and provided additional support or suggestions when needed.

I’m happy to report that they are still going strong, and their little girl is thriving with the love and attention of both parents. My client even gained the courage to carve out time for her to do things that fed her spirit, now recognizing how vital self-care is for not just her but everyone else around her.

It’s time you learned what is standing in the way of your happiness and health and what is keeping you on that treadmill or doing more and more when you could accomplish so much more with less effort.

Success, even in leadership, doesn’t have to be so hard to accomplish or harmful to your health and relationships.

You can have success and happiness IF you are willing to do the personal development work.

Blaming your coworkers for not killing themselves by working as hard as you do, is not a reflection on them; it’s a reflection on you. They are doing what they need to do to protect their sanity, their mental health, their physical health, and their marriages or their relationships.

But you know what? It’s not your fault.

You were conditioned to believe that this is what you needed to do in order to move ahead. OR, you were taught by the system or other “well-meaning” people to keep your head down and not speak up so that you wouldn’t cause any trouble.

Listen up, Sis! I/You/We are no longer available for that nonsense!

It’s time to stop blaming others and putting your future in their hands.
