There is something about speaking to an audience of Black and Brown women about the effects of corporate/workplace trauma that “hits different.”

We understand and can support each other without saying a word. Those facial expressions that say, “girrrrlllll, mmm hmmmm, I know that’s right, for real though,” make one feel seen, heard, and understood.

I had the pleasure of hosting a Masterclass this past week at the Flourish Media Conference in Miami, Florida, on “How to Heal from Corporate Trauma for Black and Brown Women,” which fed my soul.

The original layout for the masterclass was changed, but when you not only know your material but have lived it every day, you can shift on a dime, and that is precisely what happened.

Instead of being able to “take it to the wall” like I usually do, we stayed in the main assembly and had a “sister-to-sister” bonding moment.

There is something about speaking to an audience of Black and Brown women about the effects of corporate/workplace trauma that “hits different.”

We understand and can support each other without saying a word. Those facial expressions that say, “girrrrlllll, mmm hmmmm, I know that’s right, for real though,” make one feel seen, heard, and understood.

I had the pleasure of hosting a Masterclass this past week at the Flourish Media Conference in Miami, Florida, on “How to Heal from Corporate Trauma for Black and Brown Women,” which fed my soul.

The original layout for the masterclass was changed, but when you not only know your material but have lived it every day, you can shift on a dime, and that is precisely what happened. Did it work? Absolutely!

The topic resonated so much with the attendees that it became an interactive session. I shared, they shared, they asked questions of me, and I asked questions of them in return. We nodded in agreement, and they inquired about how to learn more to return to the companies they worked and consulted for. Future collaboration opportunities were discussed, contact information was exchanged, and new supportive relationships were developed.

What made this time so special for me? Because it was the first time I presented this material to a live audience filled with women, mostly Black and Brown, and other women who fully supported the message.

As you may or may not know, I have focused on dating, relationship, and marriage coaching for decades. It wasn’t until last year that I completely shifted the focus of my business to helping Black and Brown women heal from Corporate Trauma.

While no one likes to talk about trauma, it does exist. Both personally and professionally, particularly for Black and Brown women in the workplace. As I spoke from the stage, sharing examples of companies that unknowingly retraumatized the very employees they thought they were helping, the facial expressions on the attendees said it all.

I saw the horror on their faces as I shared examples of performative DEI practices that were supposed to help Black and Brown women but were created by those that either did not look like us or were not a great representation of the diversity in our life experiences.

What was supposed to help did more harm than good. The company’s actions and inaction throughout the process left the Black and Brown employees responsible for changing the mindset of the people inflicting the pain, with no oversight or plan on capturing the issues at hand or what to do after the training.

When I opened up the floor for comments, questions, and suggestions, the women shared how the actions of those companies were in direct opposition to anything that would have been helpful to the Black and Brown employees.

They shared how they have felt during performative “DEI gone wrong” training examples and how it would be uncomfortable working alongside team members that made their racist and homophobic thoughts known.

We spoke about the lack of psychological safety and the fact that most of those in leadership for DEI efforts in organizations just don’t look like us. They asked the same questions others have asked for years, “How can companies run successful DEI programs if they remain unconscious of the life experiences of those they were created to help?”

Great question, and unfortunately, I don’t believe there is an answer I could give you that would make any of this better, especially a blanket answer that will cover all scenarios.

If you are a DEI leader and not a person of color, I challenge you to learn all you can from someone of color about what it takes to do this work consciously. Walking around clueless about your privilege and how your actions may or may not be received by people of color is unacceptable.

Not knowing how to do this work consciously is no excuse either. You will not get a medal for holding a title for a position that continues to perpetuate the abuse, neglect, and workplace trauma that your role is supposed to reduce. It is your job as the leader to learn all you can so that you can begin to affect change.

If you do not have a Black woman in your life that will be completely honest with you about how to be effective in your position, how it will affect you personally and professionally if you do not do it the right way, and help you “grow through” the feelings that WILL come up as you truly begin to step into this work, I’d be happy to support you as your (paid) Conscious DEI coach. If you can’t see it, you can’t fix it.

If you are a Black or Brown woman that is going through it at the office and you need a safe place to express your frustrations, anger, hurt, and resentment with someone that understands what you’re going through and can help you learn how to navigate the corporate space with grace and ease, I’d be happy to support you as well.

I am hopeful that I can bring conscious DEI programs to corporate America, but until then, I know I can help you heal from the trauma you’ve already received and teach you how to protect your energy and your peace still in the workplace.
